How We Help
Poverty
in Latin America
A disproportionately large number of Latin Americas are
poor - around 222m, 43% of the total population, of whom 96m (18.6% of
the total) live in extreme poverty, according to the UN. These
countries do not have sufficient funds to meet their heath and education
needs. Children drop out of school because their families need them to
work. Many of the region's governments have started to address the
problem by introducing social programmes to help poor families, by
offering them cash payments as long as they keep their children in
school and take them for regular health check-ups. However, poverty
rates remain extremely high. There is also an increasing number of
people with disabilities living in the region. The World Health
Organisation and the Pan-American Health Organisation have stated that
10% of the region's 500m population have some form of disability.
